1864 to 1873 Two Cent Coins The two cent piece was designed by James B. Longacre, and was the first coin of the United States to bear the national motto "In God We Trust".  Nearly 20 million two cent coins were minted in 1864, and in 1872 only 65,000 two cent coins were issued for circulation.  In 1873 only proofs were minted.
