1864 to 1873 Two Cent CoinThe two cent piece was designed by James B. Longacre, and was the first coin of the United States to bear the national motto "In God We Trust".  Nearly 20 million two cent coins were minted in 1864, and in 1872 only 65,000 two cent coins were issued for circulation.  In 1873 only proofs were minted.

The two cent piece, offers a simple design, with "IN GOD WE TRUST" displayed on a ribbon above a shield on the and the date directly below it on the obverse.  The reverse has a simple wreath surrounding the value of "2 CENTS" and is encircled by "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA".
