1865 to 1889 Three Cent Nickels

2 cent nickelSilver shortages of the time led to widespread hoarding of all silver coins, as well as most one and five cent coins.  The introduction of the three cent nickel coin in 1865 was the answer to the problem, it was composed of copper and nickel.  It was larger than the three cent silver coins, so it was not lost as easily and was designed by James B. Longacre.

In 1877 and 1878 only proofs were issued, and mintages in those years were limited to 510 and 2,350 coins respectively.
