Buffalo Nickels, also known as Indian head nickels were minted between 1913 and 1938 and designed by James E. Fraser. It is actually a bison on the reverse not a buffalo. In 1937 there was a 3 legged buffalo, this is believed to have been caused by a die crash and after polishing out the clash marks, the resulting coins were 3 legged buffaloes.
