"shield nickelsThe shield nickel has two basic varieties:
1 - with rays (1866 - 1867)
2 - without rays (1867 - 1883)

It was designed by James B. Longacre and during 1877 and 1878 only proofs were issued.  Although proof coins were struck each year of issue, the proof 1867 nickel with rays is the rare one, it is believed that 25 pieces were made.
